Kofukan Karate Australia wins 2022 National Good Sports New Club of the Year

Kofukan Karate Australia was named the 2022 National Good Sports New Club of the Year for inspiring positive change and taking responsibility for its members.

Whilst having only joined the Good Sports Program in August last year, the club has already reached the highest level of the program, which means it has policies that cover alcohol and tobacco, illegal drugs, mental health, and safe transport.

“The Good Sports program provides simple guidance and resources to help us demonstrate our commitment to positive club culture to our members and the wider community. This Award is a demonstration of how far we have come and what we can achieve with the right commitment,” said Chairperson, Don McKay.

Mr McKay and club Secretary, Lindon McKenna, were hosted by the Alcohol and Drug Foundation at Parliament House, Canberra on 16 February 2023. The Awards ceremony recognised Good Sports clubs and their dedicated volunteers from across the country who are passionate about community, their members and making their club the very best it can be.

Inclusive culture at Kofukan Karate

Kofukan Karate Australia prides itself in having an inclusive culture and for driving connection among members and between clubs, through different events such as competitions, workshops, self-defence and anti-bullying seminars, and movie nights.

“Inclusivity is a key value, and our message is ‘karate is for everyone’. We’re a welcoming place for all, and training helps members to become more confident and engaged,” said Mr McKay.

Kofukan Karate Australia says it is also proud of providing a fun, active and safe environment for young people and encouraging parent participation.

“Karate is one of the few sports where parents and their children can train together, often in the same class. Parent involvement extends beyond training at our club, with families taking part in end of year wind-ups, beach training, camps, barbeques, and other events,” Mr McKay added.
